Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur (UMKT) is determined to contribute to achieving sustainable development in East Kalimantan and improving community welfare. To support this, UMKT established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Unit through the Rector's Decree Number 090-1/KEP/SKT/A.7/I/2024 on April 1, 2024, regarding the establishment of the Borneo Study Center. The establishment of the UMKT SDGs Unit aims to integrate education, research, and community service activities with the spirit of sustainable development, in line with UMKT's ideals and vision to participate in solving social and environmental problems.

Through the SDGs Unit, UMKT wants to ensure that all activities within the academic community support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the Local, National, and Global levels. This includes adding SDGs material into the learning and lecture processes. The UMKT SDGs Center will also help the university map priorities and opportunities, formulate action plans, and ensure SDG principles become part of daily campus policies and activities to build a shared sense of responsibility.

UMKT wants to play an active role in achieving the SDG targets in East Kalimantan by providing innovations and practical solutions, shaping a future generation that cares for the environment, and becoming a role model in adopting SDGs. Samarinda's position as a supporting city for the New Capital City (IKN) also strengthens UMKT's strategic role in addressing environmental sustainability challenges, social welfare, and the economic sector.

In the future, the UMKT SDGs Unit is expected to become a center of excellence in science, adapting to the respective scientific fields of the Faculties and Study Programs. Furthermore, the SDGs Unit is projected to become the main partner of the local government and various stakeholders in monitoring and evaluating the implementation of SDGs in the East Kalimantan region.
