Breaking Waves: The Only Swimmer from East Kalimantan Representing Indonesia at the ASEAN Para Games is a UMKT Student

Fathur Rizky Moreno, a Digital Business student at Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur (UMKT), is a living testament that disability is no barrier to global excellence. Originally from Paser Regency, Moreno—a national swimmer with intellectual disabilities—recently secured two silver medals in the S14 class at the 13th ASEAN Para Games in Thailand.

Moreno’s passion for swimming was rooted in his admiration for his older brother, a seasoned athlete in the same sport. Following in his brother's footsteps, Moreno discovered a deep love for the water, which ultimately became a vehicle for self-confidence and personal growth.

His journey to the international stage was built on years of grit. Having trained since primary school, Moreno routinely competed in regional events before moving his training to Balikpapan. It was there that his talent caught the eye of his coach, leading to a recommendation to join the National Paralympic Committee of Indonesia (NPCI).

Moreno made his professional debut at the 2021 National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) in Papua, where he delivered a stunning performance, earning two gold medals and one silver. This success propelled him into the National Training Center (Pelatnas), cementing his status as a premier athlete in the S14 IPC swimming category.

The ASEAN Para Games, held biennially following the SEA Games, serves as a premier stage for athletes with physical and intellectual impairments to promote social inclusion through sports. Competing in the 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 100m butterfly, and various relay events, Moreno faced stiff international competition. Despite the challenge, he performed brilliantly, bringing home two silver medals for the Indonesian contingent. Moreno credits the unwavering support of his family as the foundation of his success.

The victory was even more impressive considering the obstacles he faced. While elite athletes typically prepare for 8 to 12 months, Moreno had only two months for intensive preparation. His grueling schedule involved early morning swimming sessions followed by evening strength training at the gym, six days a week.

As an active student, Moreno expertly balances his academic responsibilities with his athletic career. UMKT has played a pivotal role in his development by providing full support and academic dispensations during his time at the National Training Center. This collaboration between the university and the athlete proves that academic and sporting excellence can go hand-in-hand.

For Moreno, international success is about more than just medals. "It’s about broadening my horizons and connecting with people from around the world," he shared. His efforts have not gone unnoticed; in 2024, he was invited to the Istana Negara, where he was personally honored by the President of the Republic of Indonesia for his contributions to national pride.

As the only athlete from East Kalimantan representing Indonesia in the S14 swimming class, Moreno hopes his story inspires others. "Disability should not be seen as a hindrance, but as untapped potential," he remarked. He believes that opportunities are always open to those who refuse to give up.

Moreno also expressed his hope for continued recognition from local and provincial governments, stressing that tangible support is vital for regional athletes who carry the pride of their hometowns to the global stage.

Looking ahead, Moreno’s eyes are set on the future. He dreams of returning to the National Training Center for the 2026 Asian Para Games in Japan and the 2027 ASEAN Para Games in Sarawak, Malaysia. With his characteristic determination and the support of his university and country, Moreno continues to prove to the world that greatness is defined by spirit, not by physical or mental conditions.
