MUSA at 62: Cultivating Progressive Students at UMKT Through Fostering Leadership and Intellectual Culture

umkt.ac.id, Samarinda - Throughout the history of our nation, students have been heralded as the primary agents of change. University campuses serve as the cradles of intellectual movements that drive societal transformation. It is this spirit that birthed the Muhammadiyah Student Association (locally known as IMM) — an organization dedicated to nurturing young cadres who are not only academically excellent but also socially conscious, spiritually grounded, and intellectually sharp.

This year marks the 62nd anniversary of IMM, an organization that continues to fulfill its vital role across various universities, including at Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur (UMKT).

At UMKT, IMM serves as a platform that shapes students according to Islamic, Muhammadiyah, and academic values. The movement is built upon its Tri-Competency pillars: Religiosity, Intellectuality, and Humanity. Through these foundations, IMM has become a sanctuary for students to sharpen their critical thinking, foster social empathy, and build moral integrity.

Beyond its formal programs, IMM is instrumental in cultivating an intellectual culture within the university. By developing leadership skills, the organization prepares students to provide tangible contributions to the community.

Abdullah Mubaroq, Chairman of the IMM Commissariat at the Faculty of Public Health of UMKT, noted that his decision to join was rooted in the organization’s ability to shape a student’s mindset.

"IMM conducts various activities to enhance student capabilities, such as discussion forums, scientific research, leadership training, and social advocacy," Abdullah explained. "These programs are tailored to ensure that our cadres are not just scholars, but leaders who are socially aware and capable of critical analysis."

A central tenet of the movement is the concept of the "Progressive Student." This vision demands that students excel academically while remaining steadfast in their values. In IMM’s perspective, a progressive student is one who seamlessly integrates faith, knowledge, and action into their daily lives.

Syaiful Anwar, General Secretary of the IMM Coordinating Commissariat at UMKT, added that his experience in the organization has been a "scientific laboratory" for interpersonal growth. "IMM provides a space where we can discuss current affairs and share perspectives from various fields of study — experiences that are not always available in a formal classroom setting," Syaiful remarked.

“MUSA also provides us a space called ‘the scientific laboratory’, where students can discuss books, current affairs, and share perspectives from various fields of study,” Syaiful said.

Despite its storied history, student organizations today face modern challenges. In an era of rapid information influx, some students are becoming less inclined to join structured organizations. Syaiful believes students must learn to master technology rather than becoming passive consumers of it.

Abdullah echoed this concern, noting that declining interest in student organizations is a challenge that must be tackled collectively. However, both leaders agree that student organizations remain an irreplaceable learning environment.

Amidst these challenges, IMM at UMKT strives to be an inclusive space for growth. From casual discussions and joint sports sessions to inter-community gatherings, the organization keeps the spirit of camaraderie and activism alive.

Involvement in organizations like IMM offers students the chance to develop essential life skills, including problem-solving, responsibility, and leadership.

"Do not hesitate to get involved," Abdullah urged. "Student organizations are a space to learn, grow, and strive for a better world."

As the movement moves forward, the hope remains that IMM at UMKT will always align with the university’s vision. "Keep learning, keep fighting, and do not let yourself be left behind," Syaiful Anwar concluded. "Student movements through IMM will continue to provide a positive impact for the university and society at large."

With the spirit of the progressive student, IMM at UMKT remains a moral and intellectual force, driving positive change within the campus and throughout the local community.
