Opportunity Does Not Knock Twice: How Zahra Audia Turns Challenges into Triumphs

umkt.ac.id, Samarinda — True achievement is not merely defined by the trophies, medals, or certificates accumulated along the way; it is also measured by the courage to step up, take risks, and embrace new experiences. This philosophy perfectly defines the journey of Zahra Audia Syam Hermanto.

Affectionately known as Yaya, the 2025-cohort Undergraduate Law student at Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur (UMKT) has made waves in both academic and extracurricular arenas.

Yaya’s portfolio of achievements spans multiple disciplines, proving her versatility and dedication, including:

  1. Second runner-up winner of Feed Essay Competition by KMMI Unmul,
  2. The first runner-up of the Tourism Ambassador organized by the Youth, Sports, and Tourism Office of the City of Samarinda,
  3. Winner of prestigious debate competitions, including Kompetisi Debat Mahasiswa Indonesia (Indonesian National University Debate Championship) at the university level and HIMIKA x PK IMM FK UMKT Debate Championship,
  4. An invited guest speaker for Kaltim Today’s podcast, and
  5. Campus Ambassador, representing UMKT at various public events and publications.

Yaya attributes her success to a simple rule: live without regrets and seize every opportunity that comes your way.

“I will always do my best with every opportunity ahead of me. It is a matter of 'now or never.' Success and recognition will naturally follow as long as you try your hardest and constantly strive to be the best version of yourself,” Yaya asserted.

However, her path to success has not always been seamless. Stepping into unfamiliar territory often brought immense pressure. Yet, she chooses to view these hurdles as stepping stones for personal development rather than obstacles — a mindset bolstered by the unwavering support and prayers of her parents, relatives, and loved ones.

For Yaya, the toughest battle is rarely against external competitors; it is mastering her own self-doubt. To overcome this, she constantly practices positive self-talk and uses affirmative messaging to stay grounded.

“You often only get one shot on the stage, so it is simply a matter of getting out there, giving it your all, and walking away with your head held high,” she explained.

Despite her packed schedule, Yaya maintains a healthy balance by strictly prioritizing her education.

“I deliberately scale back on non-essential activities when deadlines or exams approach. Once my academic responsibilities are fully taken care of, I can shift my focus back to my other passions,” she added.

One of Yaya’s most memorable milestones was being selected by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to participate in the Youth Anti-Corruption Class. Through this initiative, she was empowered to educate her peers on anti-corruption issues while expanding her network to include national experts and like-minded youth advocates.

Ultimately, Yaya believes that being an outstanding student means looking beyond superficial recognition. It is about having the bravery to raise the bar for oneself.

“There are countless pathways to success, and everyone starts at a different line. Never compare your progress with others because they have their own path — and so do you! Keep moving forward and never give up,” Yaya concluded.
