How Education in Samarinda is Shaping Vanessa’s Future

It is a long-term investment in our character, our way of thinking, and how we can contribute to our community.” This is the true meaning of education for Vanessa Jepkemboi Bett, an international undergraduate student from Kenya majoring in English Education at Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur (UMKT).

Vanessa, who has been living in Samarinda since August 25, 2025, describes her academic journey at UMKT as invaluable. She is highly impressed by the campus's paperless academic environment and the high quality of the lecturers and faculty staff. This positive experience has made her time here truly delightful, leaving her with absolutely no regrets about her decision to study in Indonesia.

Overcoming Culture Shock

Despite experiencing initial culture shock and adjusting to a new dress code, a motorcycle-centric lifestyle, and spicy local food, Vanessa believes these stark cultural differences are vital learning opportunities. She noted that living overseas has made her more open-minded and enriched her with irreplaceable experiences that will guide her future career as a teacher.

On the subject of learning, Vanessa reinforces the idea that education holds a far deeper meaning than simply earning a credential. She believes education serves as a powerful tool to unite people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, creating benefits that extend well beyond the individual to impact local communities.

“As long as you devote your time and effort to being educated, trust me, the fruits you reap will benefit both you and your community,” she explained.

Inspiring the Next Generation

She also recalled a specific experience that transformed her perspective. While sharing the importance of learning English as a global communication tool, she noticed how deeply engaged and enthusiastic the local school students were. Seeing them sit in and listen so intently proved to her that her journey could inspire others to dream big.

“When I was with these students, it felt like just another normal day to me. But to them, it really made an impact because I emphasized how important it is to build English language skills,” she said.

A Message to the Youth

Vanessa also believes that popularity and a large social media following are not true measures of success. Instead, she encourages young people to elevate their quality of life through education. In her view, learning enables individuals to think wisely, seize opportunities, and maximize their true potential.

Concluding her message during a recent podcast appearance, Vanessa described education as a ladder that helps individuals climb to unlimited heights. Every step represents resilience, self-development, and a learning journey that ultimately empowers people to give back to their communities. She urges the youth to seize every educational opportunity and never fear dreaming big.

“If you want what is best for your future, invest in yourself through a quality education and a strong skill set. Everything is achievable while you are still young and building your path,” Vanessa concluded.
